About Us
Founded in 1994 as MidSouth Truckers Group (MSTG), our mission was simple: help independent owner-operators access the same quality insurance and protection programs as large trucking companies. By leveraging group buying power, we made it easier for small fleets and independent contractors to compete in a challenging marketplace, all while providing the right coverage at affordable rates.
For over 30 years, we’ve specialized exclusively in trucking insurance, offering products like Physical Damage, GAP, Non-Trucking Use Liability, Occupational Accident and Settlement Deduct programs. We’ve built our reputation on value-driven solutions, easy access to knowledgeable agents and a commitment to helping truckers succeed down to the last mile of freight.
In 2026, we rebranded as NITRO Group to reflect our growth, modernization and expanded services, while staying true to our original vision: empowering independent contractors with trusted resources, education and insurance solutions to help their businesses thrive.
Whether you’re an owner-operator or a motor carrier with multiple ICs, NITRO supports your trucking business for the long haul.
Let's Get You Covered
Insurance Solutions
Physical Damage Insurance
Protect your truck and trailer with coverage for repairs or replacement in the event of a covered loss. Whether it’s a collision, fire, or other covered incident, Physical Damage insurance ensures your equipment gets back on the road quickly.
GAP Insurance
If your truck is totaled or stolen, GAP insurance covers the difference between your lender’s loan/lease balance and the Actual Cash Value of your equipment. It’s peace of mind that protects your finances when the unexpected happens.
Non-Trucking Liability (NTL)
NTL provides liability protection when you’re driving your truck for personal reasons—not under a motor carrier’s dispatch. It helps cover damages or injuries that occur while your truck is off-duty.
Occupational Accident Insurance
Independent Contractors who don’t qualify for Workers’ Compensation can rely on Occupational Accident coverage. It provides benefits for medical bills, lost income, and rehabilitation in the event of a work-related injury.
Passenger Accident Insurance
Carry passengers with confidence. This coverage protects authorized riders you bring on the road, offering financial support if an accident injures them while traveling with you.
Deductible Buyback
Some motor carriers pass auto liability or cargo deductibles to Independent Contractors. Deductible Buyback gives you the option to reduce or eliminate these out-of-pocket expenses, so you’re better protected financially.
Personal Property Insurance
Protect your personal belongings inside your truck. From electronics to tools and other valuables, Personal Property insurance helps replace items lost or damaged while on the road.

FAQs
Who should be a NITRO member?
Nitro serves independent contractors leased to a motor carrier who operate under a carrier’s authority and need access to affordable, compliant coverage.
What is the difference between Primary Auto Liability, Non-trucking Liability (NTL) and Bobtail Liability?
Primary Auto Liability covers you while operating under the motor carrier’s dispatch. It is the FMCSA-required coverage provided by the carrier. At the same time, Non-Trucking Liability (NTL) applies when you’re using your truck for personal, non-business purposes that do not benefit the carrier. Bobtail Liability offers similar but typically broader protection by covering you when you’re driving without a trailer, whether off-duty or between loads, depending on the specific policy wording.
Who provides Cargo and General Liability coverage for independent contractors?
Cargo insurance covers the freight you haul, and General Liability covers non-auto incidents like property damage at a shipper or receiver. In most leased-on arrangements, the motor carrier provides both, but requirements vary by carrier. Some may require independent contractors to reimburse deductibles or carry their own GL or supplemental cargo coverage.
